An Easy Pill to Swallow

This is my latest acquisition, a cute little pill box covered in Swarovski crystals. I must confess it is not my first. Let me tell you how it all started…

This is the collection of my friend Debbie. She started me on this road of antiquing and collecting. We’ve spent many a wonderful Saturday at flea markets and antique shows.

She uses all of her pill boxes and chooses a different one to carry in her purse each day. I noticed that she had different ones, but when I saw them en masse, I was hooked.

And it began.

The little pearl one started innocent enough. I just couldn’t resist this one with all the sparkle and the little pearls. The first one needed a friend. But when I spied this one with the micro mosaic top… I was a goner!

So as my passion grew, so did my collection.

I try to find unusual ones made from different mediums, tortoise shell, petit point, porcelains, and cloisonné.

The beauty of collecting pill boxes is the variety, range of price, and their small size. They allow you to follow your heart and buy what you love! They are so plentiful and inexpensive. So pick a material, a color, or design. You’ll find that these boxes are an easy pill to swallow.

I have a confession to make. I am a Daddy's girl. Always was and always will be. I was visiting my Dad the other day and we were reminiscing about the days when I use to visit him at the pharmacy as a little girl. Oh how I loved to see him in his white pharmacy lab coat. I just thought that my Daddy was just the most handsome man. Through the years a collection of pharmaceutical antiques and vintage pieces have been collected to honor his profession. In fact, if a piece also happens to have my Dad's name on it, it is purchased immediately just like that green bottle (Nelson's Pharmacy) next to the super cute pharmacist.

My Dad received this Pharmacy Badge in 1967 when he graduated from Florida A & M University's School of Pharmacy. Once you graduated from the university this badge was to be placed on the car.

At my dad's house he keeps his collection of rare pharmaceutical items in two antique cabinets.

I cannot remember a day when we did not have several various mortar and pestles throughout our home. The mortar and pestle was a vital tool in medicine. It is used to crush, grind and mix various substances. The "mortar" is the receptacle in which the substances are added and the pestle is for pounding. The mortar and pestle date back to early Egypt. My dad's collection includes, glass, porcelain, wooden, brass and pewter mortar and pestles.

This glass bottle is one of Daddy's favorite pieces in his collection. It is an enema bottle. He explained that it was used in the hospital. The bottle was filled up with a solution, hung upside down, and well...Spring cleaning if you will.

In 1983, Daddy went to the University of Southern California to pursue a degree and a new field of pharmacology known as Radiopharmacy. He became one of the first Nuclear Pharmacists in the State of Florida. In fact, he was one of the first African American Pharmacists (If not the first...this is bit of historical information is in the process of being determined) in the state. Daddy was involved in the preparation of various radioactive materials that were used to diagnose and treat patients.

This antique cabinet houses some additional really cool collections.

You will find all kinds of bottles in this collection. This Boracic Acid (Boric Acid) bottle dates back to the early 20th century. It was used as an eye wash, antiseptic for minor burns or cuts, acne treatment and also for the prevention of athlete's feet. Around 1948, Boric Acid was used as an insecticide.

When I looked in the cabinet there were many of these beautiful porcelain funnels which were vital laboratory equipment that was used for filtration. What was even more interesting was finding out that these were made by the Coors Company. Yes the beer folks. Daddy explained that the Coors company was known for it's porcelain and cement products long before it became a well known brewery.

The scale was also a very important tool in a pharmacy. This brass scale is still in mint condition. It played an important role in measuring medicine.

This is my favorite piece. This is Dr. Nelson's "Improved" Inhaler. It was used to relieve congestion by inhaling the vapors from boiling water. The Directions state the following: "Remove mouthpiece, half fill inhaler with boiling water replace mouthpiece and apply lips to it, breathe freely in & out as in ordinary full respiration". I am also partial to this piece because it just so happens to have the same name as my darling Daddy.

Cameo Appearance

Cameos have been around in some form as early as the third century B.C. They are carved in relief from compressed layers to reveal a portrait or scene in a contrasting color.

Initially cameos were not worn as jewelry, but were carved from gemstones as objects of art representing Greek Gods or Roman soldiers.

They have experienced periodic revivals over the centuries, the last being in the 18^th and 19^th century.

Now, most cameos are carved from shell to be worn as jewelry.

I have a few pieces that have unique colors or unusual forms

like this sweet old compact

or this darling pill box.

Some I use in my bottle making.

But my largest collection is black with white relief. I tend to look for the gorgeous ladies with flowing hair. They are grouped together and displayed in this dish. I noticed how most face the right, hmm?

Since I'm a lefty, I’ve now started looking for left facing cameos.

I found this cutie and she pushed all my buttons. I love her, and I love cameos! Hope you enjoyed them too.

What's It Wednesday #12

Milk glass is known for being milky white and opaque or translucent. The original intent was for the glassware to look like porcelain, but cost much less to produce. It originated in Venice during the 16th century and included colors such as pink, blue, black, brown and yellow. You can still find milk glass in some of these colors, however, the opaque white is the most popular.

This milk glass hand dish is ideal for holding business cards or a beautiful butterfly.

In the early 20th century, milk glass was extremely popular among the wealthy. The appeal was in its delicacy and elegance.

This pedestal milk glass bowl is perfect for holding rose buds and petals in the bath. You can see the translucence of the glass in the picture on the right. I found this great find at the local Goodwill for $1.00.

During the Depression milk glass was not produced as elegantly as before. During the 1930s and 40s the production was of a lesser quality.

This hobnail bowl with the top sat on my grandmother's dresser for as long as my mother and I mother could remember. For decades it played the roll of the Tooth Fairy by housing the baby teeth of three generations of children.

What's It Wednesday #11

In Ghana, It is more important to think then to react. This sculpture of the profile of the thinker is a nice reminder.

This metal water carrier walks among the porcelain roses.

This darling Blackamoor stands tall and proud. Blackamoor mean't dark skin. I can tell you it was love at first sight the day he and I met. He represents the lovely people of northern Africa and Southern Spain.

This lovely "Queen Mother" is very tall and has a place of prominence on the entertainment unit in the family room

My favorite ebony sculpture is of the woman and the vessel of water. It is quite a delicate carving.

These West African weddings combs are so unique. The carving is quite intricate.

Ghanaians are known for their fertility sculptures. They range from wedding combs to a variety of statues.

This old guy keeps me on my toes. He is a beautiful ebony carving with a marble base. He hails from Kenya and adds just the right touch on top of the refrigerator.

This is a collection of carved canes from Kenya and Ghana. They make a real statement in the entry.

Finally, these five gentlemen interlock and are carved from one piece of wood. Amazing! They form the base for this side table.

The Laroche family

We all know the story of the RMS Titanic that struck an iceberg during her maiden voyage on a beautiful calm April night in 1912 and slowly sank in the North Atlantic. What many people are not aware of is the fact that aboard that ship was one black family. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Laroche and their daughters, Simmone and Louise were traveling from France to Haiti, which was the birthplace of Joseph. Even though Joseph studied to be an engineer in France, racial discrimination in France made it quite difficult for Joseph to get a high-paying job. The family’s only option was to return to Haiti. The Laroche family traveled second class on the Titanic, since 1st class was sold out. The couple was expecting their third child at the time they boarded the ship. Due to the fact that the Laroche’s were an interracial couple, they were harassed and taunted at every turn. After the historic ship struck an iceberg, Joseph loaded his wife and children onto a lifeboat. That would be the last time they saw each other because he went down with the ship.

Shortly after the Civil War, railroad businessman George Pullman crafted "sleeping cars" from regular passenger cars. This led to the hiring of many former slaves. These men were called Pullman Porters and were later known for their attention to detail, and the level of service they provided the passengers.

I collect Pullman Porter memorabilia in honor of these very hard working men. They not only worked for very low wages, but were overworked and dealt with countless indignities on the job. These gentlemen were also credited for the development of the black middle class. Many black families were afforded the opportunity to send their children to colleges and universities as early as the late 19th century.

When I was a little girl, there was a show that came on the television called "Julia". Whatever it was the adults always tuned in. I would later find out that this was a ground-breaking sitcom in that it was the very first time that an African-American female was in the non-stereotypical role such as a maid. Actress Diahann Carroll played the lead as nurse Julia Baker who was a widowed single mother. Her husband was a fighter pilot who had been shot down in Vietnam. When I became an adult collector, one of the first things I had to find was a Julia lunch box, just like the one I had as a little girl. She is proudly displayed in my kitchen.

Also in my kitchen is this placard of Uncle Remus. He is a fictional character that is an old slave who told stories about animals and a variety of old folklore. Children would gather around to hear an Uncle Remus story. Uncle Remus spoke with the slave dialect of the Deep South. Br'er Rabbit (Brother Rabbit) is the main character of his stories. Many of Uncle Remus' stories were and still are considered politically incorrect, culturally incensitive, and racist.

When we see Aunt Jemima, we think of a delicious breakfast of hot fluffy pancakes. This was not always the case. The character of Aunt Jemima dates back to the mid 1800s as a prominent character in minstrel shows. Some Aunt Jemima's were presented by performers in blackface. The character was later adopted for commercial use. Once she was used for commercial use she wore a 'kerchief on her head and an apron. At one point a former slave was used to act as the Aunt Jemima pancake mix spokesperson. Many viewed Aunt Jemima as the male "Uncle Tom" and therefore she was not necessarily regarded highly in the African-American community since she was seen as the stereotypical African-American female. Have you noticed Aunt Jemima's updated new look?

In the mid 1990s, the Mattel toy company joined forces with Nabisco to promote Barbie with Oreo cookies. This doll is called the Oreo Fun Barbie. The idea was little girls across the nation could play with Barbie and eat Oreos. There was just one problem. The term "Oreo" is offensive in the black community. It mean't that you were a black person on the outside but "acted white" on the inside. This reference included any black person who was able to speak the Queen's English or had any ambitions to do well. Needless to say, Mattel recalled the Barbie and it is one of the most sought after by collectors. Since I was one of those who was frequently called an "Oreo" in high school, I treated myself to my own Oreo Barbie.

As a scrapbooker, I am so grateful to have in my possession my grandmother's college scrapbook. I read it all the time. Every time I read it I discover something new. It is chock-full of historical references, pictures, schedules, menus, newspaper articles, and dance cards. Her World War II scrapbook is also equally as amazing.

In the scrapbook I found this certificate my grandmother received in 1932 for participating in a tree planting ceremony. This had so much significance for me due to the my own environmental and conservation efforts. She definitely planted a seed.

This is the program from when my grandmother graduated from college in 1932.

I had read my grandmother's scrapbooks hundreds of times. One particular day, I really focused on the people who were in attendance at her graduation. I almost fell out of my chair when I realized that Dr. Carter G. Woodson gave the Commencement Address at my grandmother's graduation from Florida A & M College (Now University) in 1932. Dr. Woodson was a noted African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. This is the man that is known as the "Father of Black History". 1926 was the beginning of Negro History Week which is now known as Black History Month which occurs every year in February.

I am so grateful for having been blessed with a grandmother who taught me the value of history and its people. She taught me to have pride and to never be prejudice.

Tickling The Ivory

My love of collecting sometimes takes me far afield, as beautiful objects can be found in many forms. In an earlier post I shared with you my collection of ivory puzzle balls. Today, I'm sharing some other ivory pieces that are favorites of mine. First is this colorful pair depicting the Emperor and Empress astride their majestic elephants. I love their coloring and beautiful faces.

She, so elegant and demure; and he, so regal. What do you think they are? Salt and pepper shakers, perhaps? Take a guess. After all, it’s “What’s It Wednesday”, right?

Okay, here you go. What? Still no clue? These are snuff bottles. The Chinese began using them to carry powdered tobacco when smoking was outlawed during the Qing Dynasty. “Snuff” was allowed because it was thought to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders.

These are “Lucky Gods”. They represent good fortune and prosperity. Each body is carved from teak wood with attached ivory face, hands, and inlaid symbols applied to the robes.

This small carving depicts a weary traveler resting on his “Foo Dog”, the Chinese guardian lion thought to have mythical powers of protection.

This beautiful Geisha dreams of the future as she prepares to serve tea. The designs are first carved and color applied to bring out the details of the piece.

These little cuties remind me to keep to the straight and narrow path. Do you recognize them? They represent the Japanese proverb, “Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil”. The fourth guy? “Do no evil”! LOL

This is what is known as a netsuke. Japanese used them as toggles to attach pouches to carry small objects, as the traditional kimono had no pockets. The intricately carved detail is wonderful, and makes this playful pair of fish sharing a worm, come to life. The proud carver has signed his work.

These two are netsukes as well. They have two faces carved into a rolling ball, representing the struggle between good and evil within.

Part of the reason I love collecting antiques is simply because of the history behind each piece. The other part of the reason is because of the sheer beauty of such found objets d'art.

Ormolu originally came from the French which meant to ground or pound gold. By the 18th-century the English used the term for applying very finely ground gold into a mercury mixture that was then applied to bronze. As you can imagine this was very dangerous. In fact, the artisans that originally applied this technique did not live to see age 50.

Around 1830, mercury was banned in France and the process evolved into a type of electro-plating. Ormolu is most commonly seen on decorative items such as tables, clocks, and vases. This ormolu casket jewelry box with velvet interior was an absolute steal. I purchased it for $2.00 at the local Goodwill because it has a hairline crack in the beveled glass top. Nothing a strain a pearls can't hide

It was love at first sight when I saw this French perfume bottle at a French antique store. The gold ormolu floral motif overlay over molded glass just made my heart skip a beat.

This 24 karat gold plated double cherub perfume bottle with atomizer is my absolute favorite.

This antique gold gilt ormolu has a beautiful leaf motif covering the glass perfume bottle.

Sometimes finding the right piece, for the right price, can take years. But that’s half of the fun. I had always wanted a French lace vanity tray. It was so worth the wait.

Patience lead to the perfect vignette for our dresser. I topped it off with the ormolu standing hand mirror. Nothing like a little gold to make a girl feel special.

My New Year’s Resolution is to use it or lose it as far as collecting goes. So when I opened a drawer and ran across my collection of hand clips, I had to think fast to save them. This vignette features a lovely Victorian hand adorned with pearls used to hold a pair of gloves.

“Keep nothing you do not believe to be beautiful or useful”. Tall order, but this tiny French “hand” mirror ticks both boxes. It’s beautifully crafted with the elegant hand of a lady as the handle to the two-sided mirror. It’s a keeper!

This pink porcelain piece by Lefton is used on the hall table as a business card holder,

while this stylish open hand holds rings and pins. I love the painted nails and ring.

This one is used on the desk to hold papers, as it’s intent.

Nevertheless, I also use them to hang pictures or hold vintage handbags. I even hot-glued pins and brooches to cover the nail heads for extra sparkle!

Last, is this framed collage of hand clips which I find beautiful on their own,

but they can also be used to display jewelry. Yep, you guessed it, I didn’t lose a one!

So if you ever need a hand you know who to call!

Coffee, Tea, or Me?

There is nothing like curling up with a warm drink to get us through the winter. Legend has it that in the 8th century an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats would get friskier after consuming coffee cherries. Around the 11th century, the Arabians were roasting and boiling coffee beans. The tea plant originated from East and South Asia and was commonly used in 200 BC (The Qin Dynasty).

Coffee and tea are an essential part of hubby and my daily routine. We start our day with a great cup of coffee and immediately after work we reflect on our day over a robust cup of tea. You ever have a that special cup or mug that just makes coffee or tea taste even better? That's what these very cups do for me. On the weekend, this is the set I bring out for hubby and I to enjoy our coffee.

In the mid 20th century this beautiful post-war Japanese tea set was purchased by my grandmother. It is my absolutely favorite set because it has so much meaning.

This silver tilting teapot with wooden handle is covered with ornate, decorative engravings was one of the very first antiques I began to collect. Below the teapot is the burner which would keep the tea warm. Care to join me for a cup of chai?

I have to say that I am not really a chintz kinda girl. However, I am obsessed with this 1930s DuBarry by James Kent, of Staffordshire, England. I started this collection with this demitasse cup and saucer. I fell in love with this pattern after visiting Cindy at My Romantic Home.

Then I found that I have just fallen in love with many of James Kent's designs. I love roses so therefore I could not let this "Old Foley" tea set slip out of my hands. This company that produced this gorgeous china was established in England in 1897.

When I came across this beautiful stacking teapot, also made by James Kent in the "Chinese Rose" pattern, I totally fell in love. There is a beautiful bluebird sitting on the teapot which is at the bottom. The little teapot has a built in strainer inside the base of the spout. The creamer sits at the top with the lid and the middle section is the actual tea cup.

In 1950s England, the Midwinter pottery company was well known for their innovative tableware. One of the noted designers was Sir Hugh Casson whom I always loved as an architect, writer, and illustrator. The teapot on the left and the creamer on the right is from the "Riviera" collection and sandwich plate is from the "Cannes" collection.

So what happens if you don't like coffee or tea? Well there is always hot chocolate. Hot chocolate taste even better served from a beautiful hand painted porcelain chocolate pitcher. I tend to be partial to the Japanese and French ones.

A Very Ivy & Elephants Christmas

What's It Wednesday # 4

A very Ivy & Elephants Christmas is very diverse, in fact down right eclectic. It is an compilation of several collections from Santas and snowmen, to Wedgwood and Waterford and everything in between.

I absolutely love angels. Placing this angel in the foyer under my favorite cloche is the perfect way to set the holiday mood as you enter our home.

The setting of my great-grandmother's dining table with my grand-mother's wedding china is a special tribute to the matriarchs of our family. Though they are not with us here on Earth we place two gold angels on the table to represent these two very strong women. This is where the family Christmas dinner will take place.

This beautiful lady stands at the head of the dining table representing four generations of strong women in our family.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother made this Christmas tree. We place it on my great-grandmother's buffet every Christmas.

My great-grandmother's Philco television is adorned by this beautiful angel.

Christmas bunnies are adorable. Plus she looks so cute next to the picture of my dear grandmother.

These are my absolute favorite snowmen and women. They are actually candle holders. I just love them grouped together.

I have a few Christmas obsessions. I have a weakness for a gorgeous Santa Claus adorned in a regal suit or robe. So I will show you a few of my favorites.

I hide Christmas cookies in this ceramic gentleman.

This jolly fellow greets us for Christmas breakfast.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus flank a picture of moi.

This little doll reminds me of when I was a little girl.

Carolers just put the whole family in the mood to sing all the Christmas favorites.

I use my favorite snow globe as a center piece on the cocktail table surrounded by a red berry wreath. Once you wind up the snow globe Christmas music plays while the cutest train rides along the track.

You can never have enough Christmas trees in the house. This whimsical tree is in the guest bathroom and is chock full of some of my favorite ornaments.

My son has been collecting Christmas ornaments ever since he was two (two whole years). These are four of his favorites.

I love a chocolate nut cracker....yummmmmmy!!!!

This Santa is my latest acquisition. Thank you Cracker Barrel!!! The little guys down in the front, I collected in college. Every year, the Dollar Store use to sell them. The Nutcracker, on the right with the cutest tall furry hat, was found at Tarjay (Target of course).

I have a confession, of all of my collections my Waterford collection of ornaments is the largest. I will share a few of them with you. This piece is from the Songs of Christmas collection.

This Waterford crystal is the Ten Lords a Leaping ornament from the 12 Days of Christmas collection. It was one of my very first pieces. In addition to the ornaments being beautiful, the hooks that come along with the ornaments are equally as beautiful.

Another very recent acquisition from the good folks at Cracker Barrel. He now sits on the refrigerator.

Waterford also has beautiful heirloom ornaments. This Santa seems to have so much personality.

Ok I am a little obsessed with Santa. There was no way I could leave this salt and pepper shaker at the Cracker Barrel.

So let me share with you how my little Waterford ornament collection grows. I hit Bloomingdales and Macy's the day after Christmas, each and every year. That is when they go on sale and funny enough I run in to the same ladies each and every year at the Waterford display.

I love collecting ornaments when traveling. The ornament on the left I picked up while visiting Jekyll Island, the cotton ornament came from St. Simon Island, and the third ornament is made from a shell that I purchased in the Cayman Islands.

So where do I go from here? I just keep going. Now I have added to my ~~obsession~~ collections. I have fallen in love with Wedgwood ornaments.

The Whitehouse ornaments are also my newest love. They have a new, fabulous one, every year.

Victorian Dreams (What’s It Wednesday #3)

My favorite décor for Christmas is Victorian. It is romantic and oh so excessive!

So in true Victorian style, that means I can keep buying ornaments and just pile on more and more. Don’t you just love Christmas!

This is my idea of a “Victorian dream catcher”. The wonderful Rosemary at Ozma of Odds inspired me. She makes the most incredible creations! I hope I did you proud, Rosemary.

I think I’ll sew on some more pearls and be on the lookout for more butterflies. After all, it is a “Victorian” dream catcher, right?

Giving Thanks

This Thanksgiving finds us with plenty of reasons to give thanks. This week we are taking time to reflect and show our gratitude to all the wonderful people who have come by to pay us a visit and the fabulous folks that leave us such warm and supportive comments. A special thanks goes out to the 300 plus followers. We are especially thankful for all the new friends this blog has brought us. Our Thanksgiving wish is for everyone to have a safe and memorable holiday with a harvest of blessings.

November 31st will be the six month anniversary of Ivy & Elephants. Next week we will be launching the What's It Wednesday blog linky party. We cordially invite you to join us as we party our way through the holidays.

As Time Goes By

One thing we just don’t have enough of is time. I guess that’s why I’ve always gravitated toward clocks, watches, hourglasses, and all things related to time. My most favorite form of timepiece is the French mantle clock. I’ve a few I’d like to share, like this beauty. It has an enamel inset of angels, a pair of peacocks, and a hand painted satin glass finial. Yummy!

This design originated in France around the 1600’s. It is ormolu or gold-gilt bronze as it is known here in the U.S. The original process added high karat gold to the metal during the firing process. Many of the workers didn’t live past forty from all the metal they inhaled from the process! By the next decade, they exacted a better process. Thank heavens!

Many of the clocks we love were made by the New Haven factory that was formed in Conn. by Hiram Camp in 1853.

The company lasted over one hundred years, but finally closed its doors for good in 1960.

Many of the company’s gorgeous designs still continue to warm our hearts today, like this little guy.

Someone once inquired about my collection and asked me if they all work. In truth, I don’t know, nor do I care.

I just love them for their beauty. It speaks of a time when form was prized over function, and people ‘did’ stop to smell the roses.

I think each face with its delicate enameling and lovely gilt is a work of art.

Even the tiny hands are each unique and intricately designed.

This blown glass one with heavy gilt detail, called my name for a while until the shop owner took pity on my lusting, and a deal was made. Thanks, Ody!

Oh, this little jewel I just had to show you. Not for the watch, but for the exquisite watch holder! It’s egg shaped with a beveled glass door. But, just look at the etched glass back. Isn’t it fabulous! I bought it on eBay and didn’t even notice the etching until it arrived! I guess no one else did either; I got it for a song.

This is my little ball clock I got from the same shop. She knows how I love clocks and put it aside for me. Her shop is amazing. If you’re ever in Miami, check her out at Ody’s Antiques.

Last, what home would be complete without an anniversary clock? I got this tiny one because of the sparkle of the four crystal cubes as they spin back and forth. (You know I can’t resist the bling!)

Hooray for Bollywood

Bollywood is the term given to the illustrious film industry of India. It is my understanding that this term was a derivation of Bombay (now Mumbai) and Hollywood. For me Bollywood is everything I dream India to be; Colorful, romantic, spiritual, beautiful, elegant, and rhythmic.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - Miss World 1994 and Bollywood Great

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is my all time favorite Bollywood actress. She is not only absolutely gorgeous, but she is an amazing dancer and actress.

My fascination for India started long before I knew anything about Bollywood. It started with these two marriage dolls and my love for Rudyard Kipling. I received these very special dolls when I was a little girl from a colleague of my mother's who brought them from India.

I never played with them like I would with my other dolls. I had dolls from all over the world, either from travels or as gifts. These dolls were different. I would stare at them as if they were a Bollywood movie. They will always have such special meaning in my heart.

The ebony oxen is one of my favorite finds from an international antique dealer. Those three jeweled boxes were a Christmas gift from my dear friend Patti.

I love all teapots, but especially teapots from India. These two were a gift from my mother-in-law.

In case you didn't notice, I love elephants. There are two kinds that are throughout my house. African and Indian elephants. So here is a quick lesson on how to tell them apart. An African elephant's ears looks like the shape of the continent of Africa. The ears of the Indian elephant...well...do not look like the shape of Africa or India. Of all of the elephant lamps, this one is my favorite. It's quite small and adds a beautiful glow to the refrigerator scape.

This vintage tea pot adds just the right flair on the bar of the kitchen under the cloche. I actually purchased this for my husband's collection, but he let's me use it (shhhh!!)

Another of my favorites out of India is incense. My sister-in-law has me absolutely hooked. I use them all the time. My favorite scent is chandan. From my love of incense grew my collection of brass incense burners of all shapes and sizes.

I am in love with Indian art and textiles. When they are combined, as they are in this amazing tapestry of gold thread, it was a win win find. The antique dealer was going out of business, which is how I acquired this piece. (Talk about lucky day). The detail of the stitching on velvet is remarkable.

I am a total Bollywood junkie. I can watch Bollywood movies for hours. Confession: Prior to meeting my husband, I could not stand these movies. Now I am hooked, but guess what? He never liked them. He is such a guy!!!

The second best thing to come out of India are the spices (I will tell you the best thing later). Not only are they colorful, but extremely aromatic. I have a science background so I find the chemistry of Indian cuisine just fascinating. My pantry and cabinets are filled to the rim with spices from around the world, but the majority of them come from India. I love cooking Indian food. Diversity is what keeps our home alive with color, sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. I purchased this Indian Railway advertisement for my husband years ago.

Okay so here is your test. Can you tell what type of elephant this is by it's ears?

What about this fella? He sits just outside of the entrance of the kitchen. Oh you guys are good. You guessed it...all of these elephants are from India.

These are my favorite candle holders.

India is known for it's amazing jewelry. The designs are quite intricate. The gold jewelry is 24kt and therefore is much deeper in color.

If I wear gold, I only wear Indian gold. Actually, my favorite metals are white metals. When I received this silver anklet set, for my wedding, with bells attached I was over the moon. I put them on and dance around the house as if I were in a Bollywood movie. It's so much fun.

Tradition is so important in India. These bangles, called churias, are worn by the newlywed for several weeks. I was honored to wear them. When you wear them in public everyone (who is Indian that is) knows that you just got married. So I reveled in the double takes (not being Indian and all) and then the blessings from strangers.

Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan are two of my favorite Bollywood male actors. Getting their autographs will be a must when I visit India. They are two of the best leading men on the planet

However, the best leading man is my husband Kal. This picture was way to much fun to make.

He is truly the best that came out of India. Those marriage dolls brought me blessings many years later. By the way, the little guy in the picture with the jewelry is my hubby.

Off the Chain

Chatelaines are one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry to have evolved out of the Edwardian and Victorian eras. The name chatelaine historically comes from the french word châtelaine which previously referred to the female owner or wife of the owner of a rather large home, manor, or castle. These ladies were the keeper of the keys. The term was later used for the decorative belt hook or clasp that was worn at the waist with a collection of suspended chains. As time progressed these decorate pieces were, instead of keys, scissors, a watch, thimble, vinaigrette, notebook, makeup compacts, and much more that hung from the ornate appendages of a chatelaine.

Chatelaines were not only utilitarian, but were quite beautiful. As in all things, the chatelaine evolved into decorative jewelry that reflected the status of the woman who wore it. The chatelaine either draped over or attached to the woman's belt. The long chains dangled down her skirt and everything she needed was close at hand. The beautiful objects that hung from these glorious appendages are what we like to collect and they are "Off the Chain".

Paula's great-grandmother's coin purse with makeup compact was one of her mother's favorites to carry to the dances in college. Although the mirror is cracked and the pressed powder is gone, the memories will last forever.

This sterling silver compact belonged to Paula's grandmother; her initials are monogrammed on the cover. We still can't figure out how these women applied face powder with such a small applicator.

A Victorian woman never left home without her money. In England they used sovereign cases.

You just slide the coins in and out with ease and grace. Couldn't find a shilling so a nickel had to do.

These women knew how to socialize in style. Not even a headache could keep them at home. So just in case, they placed their pills in beautiful silver pill boxes and attached it to the chatelaine.

Who are we kidding? This beautiful repoussé object was most likely a snuff box.

If you must hem something, then you may as well place your needles in a sterling silver repoussé sewing safe.

Chatelaines were also the de rigueur for evenings as well. A lady’s evenings centered around dinner and dancing. The expression, “My dance card is full”, derived from actual fact. This is a dance card from the late 1800’s. It fans open to reveal thin sheets of ivory or celluloid upon which the lady kept the names of the suitors she’d promised a dance. Quaint, isn’t it?

These little gems are propelling pencils, which were used to write on the dance card. They were invented in 1822. I love these two sparkly ones with the jeweled tops. (It’s always about the bling!)

Another necessary item of the day was a vinaigrette. Usually made of silver, these small boxes housed cotton that had been soaked in the lady’s perfume. The perforated top allowed the lady a quick sniff to combat offensive odors, which were common since the preferred mode of transportation was the horse and carriage!

This vesta case or match safe was a common item to carry on a chatelaine. The bottom has a ribbed edge on which to strike the match. Remember the only form of heat was a fireplace, so matches were a handy tool.

As we exit for the dance, we’ll leave you with this evening chatelaine. It has a small flask for perfume, a small coin holder, a dance card and propelling pencil, as well as a small compact for powder. What more could a lady need? We hope you’ve enjoyed this “Off the Chain” post.
