Up In Smoke

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and may complicate pregnancy. Ok now that that is out of the way, let's look at some amazing collectables that came out of the culture of smoking.

Part of this smoking culture from around the world was the creation of fashionable accessories which are now highly sought after.

After Patti introduced me to the blog world, I was a blog voyeur for quite awhile. I ran across a blog where gorgeous cigarette cases were highlighted. Falling in love with silver cigarette cases was a natural attraction for me. The author of the post said that photographs would look great in these cases. That was my OMG moment. I would give my eye teeth, as they say, to find that blog again and thank that person for introducing me to cigarette cases. So let me introduce you to a few of mine. Let's see what they look like individually.

I collect silver cigarette cases from all over the world. I think they are fascinating. Oh and don't they make awesome picture frames? That blogger was absolutely right. By the way, meet my little prince.

I love the corners on this German silver cigarette case.

Using silver cigarette cases as picture frames is ideal because they are quite versatile. As you can see, you can use them portrait or landscape. These Halloween photos are perfect in this vintage English cigarette case.

I fell in love with this enameled cigarette case by the Saart Brothers because it perfectly compliments my mother's jewelry box. She received this beautiful jewelry box from Asia when she was in junior high school.

So I keep one of my favorite photos of my mom inside this beautiful cigarette case.

This cigarette case has an amazing scene of a beautiful temple on the cover which is the perfect accent to the photo of my little prince and me.

This very small cigarette case hails from England and is the perfect size for this small picture of my mother as a little girl. It compliments the platinum embossed vintage plate that I picked up from a wonderful gal named Linda, on my way to the Florida Keys.  Linda works at one of Pat's and my favorite antique stores called Jacobsen's Antiques and Collectibles. Click here and give them a call.  They will give anyone who mentions Ivy and Elephants a 10% discount. They never disappoint.

According to dear Uncle Paul, smoking a pipe was something a gentleman would commonly do. When he use to smoke, he would often stop by the Dunhill shop on Duke Street in London in pursuit of a fancy new pipe, cigar, or lighter. This is his cigar stand. He said it held a pipe for each of the seven days of the week.

The shop that Uncle Paul use to frequent was opened in London in 1907 by Alfred Dunhill on Duke Street. In the 1920s Mr. Dunhill introduced, to the world, the then revolutionary lighter that allowed you to light it with one-hand. Flick and it was lit. This is a feature we take for granted today.

This is one of the first Dunhill lighters Uncle Paul treated himself to as a very young man.

This vintage solid gold Dunhill lighter is Uncle Paul's favorite. Dunhill's are considered the cream of the lighter crop for collectors.

Uncle Paul's table top cigar humidor, from Jamaica, has beautiful inlaid wood. Look closely at the top and you will see the silhouette of the island of Jamaica. Now if he could just find the key to get those fine cigars out of there.

Speaking of silver, this silver cigarette box, with its patina, is simply beautiful. As you will learn, I have a thing for boxes. They say, "Guess what's inside"?

I love little silver boxes so picking up this cute little antique silver matchbox cover was a perfect fit.

Collecting Cigar boxes are also alot of fun. Each brand is a piece of art work in and of itself. In fact, haven't you seen the beautiful purses that are being made from these amazing cedar boxes? This particular cigar box came from the Domincan Republic.

These beautiful boxes are a great place to store wonderful pictures.

Patti brings us this beautiful humidor from the early 1900's. It was used to store cigars, cigarettes, and pipe tobacco at ideal temperatures.

Unlike the table top humidor from Jamaica, this floor model is carved as a piece of furniture and is tin lined to keep in moisture.

Is there anything that you collect as a result of a blog you ran across and fell in love with?

Be an angel and stop back by next week for "Angels Among Us".

  3. What a brilliant idea to use silver cigarette cases as picture frames. It gives this area of collecting a whole new perspective. I just love your little princes, by the way.

I collect 18th and 19th century silver snuff boxes and vinaigrettes but I can see that cigarette cases will increase in interest, and value, as we distance ourselves from smoking.

Than you for such an interesting post and sharing your collection.
