What's It Wednesday #20
If you’ve followed our blog for a while, you know that there’s very few collections we shy away from. This week I want to share a work in progress with you. In progress because a collection is never really finished, is it? I'm in awe of all the beautiful dressing tables and vanities I’ve seen in blog land. So, I'm working on my own!
It started with a desire for a pretty powder jar for my dresser. As I kept my eyes peeled, I’d find one here and there and learn as I’d go. I found so many unusual pieces rouge pots, hair receivers, even toothbrush holders! Plus, they came in so many different materials from porcelain, brass, sterling, ormolu, even Bakelite! Nevertheless, I knew I loved leaded glass with the silver tops, so I decided to start there.
This powder shaker is my absolute favorite! Even the dealer who sold it to me didn’t know how it worked. As I cleaned it, I found a tiny lever that slides out to release the powder. Amazing! The repoussé on this piece is incredible.
Well, just pretty jars on the dresser were somewhat bland. So, I found a silver tray to hold a hair brush, mirror, and a clothes brush I’d accumulated all adorned with this gorgeous nymph with flowing hair.
These pieces were all found separately, but inspired by the mirror, which was the first find of the group.
Once I found the basic pieces, I too thought I was done and happy.
Then came the nail file followed by the buttonhook. Now, I’m always on the lookout for something unique and useful for the vanity set.
I leave you with my latest find, this cute little hat brush! The design on the handle is gorgeous! So the hunt continues, and the collection grows…
Hugs,
Patti

You have gathered some very beautiful pieces!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the pieces of silver you have. My mother has a collection on her dresser but not as beautifully ornate as yours, Hers is English silver. However, She has the most exquisite little perfume bottle which is like a little birds egg with a silver top. If you do a search on my blog for "duck egg blue" I have a picture of it there if I remember rightly.
ReplyDeleteThank you again for letting me link up,I hope to link up again.

All the details are beautiful! Great collection. I love looking at silver pieces too for the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI love that the pieces match even though you did not find them together! You are a master treasure hunter!! I've always admired those silver vanity sets and I have often imagined brushing my strawberry blonde, waist length curls while gazing into a silver hand mirror. Only, I don't have waist length curls or strawberry blonde hair, but that's besides the point! The vanity set is beautiful! :) Silver is absolutely classic and my favorite!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous collection, Paula! There's just something about the beauty of that old silver that is so special. I ended up storing my everyday stainless silverware set and pulling out my MIL's vintage set to use each day. I LOVE the depth and warmth of that old silver. :)

You have touched my heart with your post. I have ALWAYS loved such "Vanity Fair" and have collected it along my life's journey! The funny thing I found out along that journey is that LOTS of these were made on the NEXT STREET over from where I was brought up...The name of the street was "SILVER STREET"(I had NOT made the connection MAYBE because the factory was gone, BUT the LOVE of the pieces MUST have been in the air AND I caught it!
ReplyDeleteYour collection is magnificent...
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing it with us.
Big Hugs,
Donna
That is such a beautiful collection and you have it all displayed so pretty! So nice to visit here...

I used to have a mirror and brush very much like the one you have on here. I sold it at a garage sale one time, and every now and then I regret doing so. I think I should have kept it forever. These are lovely items you have.

Patti, I too love dressing tables and all the fixin's. I love the style of items you selected to collect. I have a few bakelite hair receivers. as a matter of fact, you're the only other person in the world I've ever heard use those words other than my antique shop owner/friend. I have a mirror, not as nice as yours though, a few boxes and a brush. You've inspired me to keep collecting. Have a lovely weekend!
