Tattered and Worn

I’ve always had a love for things that are “of an age”, distinguished and filled with character.

For some that means unblemished perfection,

but for me, the battle scars and worn scuffs of time just reveal a life of service and love.

Would you have passed on these lovely Victorian photo albums with worn and faded covers, tattered ends loose save for their elegant clasps that nod to better days?

Ah, but these are treasures that I give pride of place.

I can’t resist old velvet and handsome lace candy boxes that held chocolates from a young suitor.

Or this embroidered box which may of held love letters or trinkets from a first love.

The colors gone soft and muted with time.

Look at this gorgeous old leather handbag and coin purse, both butter soft and cracked with age.

My reactions to objects are visceral. I love first with my heart. This process has served me well over the years. I still love my chipped porcelain, my tarnished silver, and my clocks that don’t keep time. I buy what I love, so I can never be disappointed. I hope you will do the same.
Hugs,
Patti

  7. Such treasures you have photographed and shared. My late mom loved little purses like yours. Wishing you a blessed day.

  8. I live by that rule - if I don't love it I don't buy it and have taught my daughter that as well. I often hear her say, "it's nice but I don't love it so I'm not getting it." It saves a lot of money that way and you are always happy with what you have. Your post is lovely!

  22. Hi Patti,
this photo albums and candy boxes are to die for. What great time they have experienced. Would be so nice if they could tell us their life. I love old photos, especially when I know, who the persons are. We all get a bit tarnished with the years of our life. Thank you for sharing your rgeat collections and the wonderful inspirations of your features.
    Best greetings, Johanna

I love the way you have with your words, weaving enchantment and romanticism into each and every piece... oooh the stories they could each tell... tattered and torn are all the more precious to me... as I know they were (and are) truly loved... that handbag and coinpurse are my favorites... or wait!... maybe it's the photo albums... no, it's definitely the vintage chocolate boxes... or, or... see how you are?... you have me loving every single one of them!... xoxo Julie Marie (Hello Paula!)

  29. Hi Patti, about imperfections, I have a hard time finding beauty in a piece that does not have some imperfections :)
This is a beautiful well written post, and your photo's fit its story soulfully.
Thank you Patti for making time on your 4th to visit me.
I so enjoyed the day filled with red, white, and blue but I am looking forward to what this week has in creative works for me! :)

Have a beautiful week and weekend to come finding pieces that inspire what we so look forward to from you.

  31. PATTI DEAR!

Oh that photo album with the beautiful metal embellishments...I found one once at a good price but the entire album was TOO tattered. SO, I took off the numerous metal embellishments and I used those for art projects! I love to see what PARTS of a whole I can use.

I hope you had a wonderful fourth! Isn't it LOVELY to be off from school? The heat was a bit excessive for us to be out. We were invited to go to a friend's house for a cook out but NOT IN THIS INFERNAL HEAT!

    LOVE TO YOU PATTI! Anita

Second, thank for hosting every week and giving bloggers a very classy place to share.

And third, a humble thank you for the feature of the pallet table. It is very much appreciated.

  35. Dear Patti,
How very kind of you to visit and leave such a sweet note about Darby.
I too, love the worn and tattered.
I absolutely love that old album.. If I were given something like that as a gift I would be in heaven.. To me, holding something as this is holding a part of history and wondering about it's past with the people who owned it.
Beautiful post... I love your collection.

    Blessings,
    Penny

  58. Your vintage boxes and books are so lovely. I have an old Bible that belonged to my Great-Grandmother, which was then lovingly used by my Grandmother. My Gramma & I were extremely close, so she gave the Bible to me before dementia completely took her mind. I truly treasure this connection with my family history.

I'm adding your Party to my "Party List," so I can remember to link up some time. I guess I thought your "What's It?" party was just for vintage-type things, but after reading more closely, I realize pretty much anything goes....LOL!

Hope you have a great week!
