Toy Story

What's It Wednesday #66

It has been a raining off and on the last couple of days. When it's raining out, my mind starts to wonder. I was watching my kids play with their toys and I began to think about the toys I use to play with. Then I started to wonder about how much fun my mom and her brother, Uncle Freddie, use to have when they were kids with their toys.

So off I went into the storage room and started to pull out bins of toys. I went through the toys my brother and I use to play with and then I went through the bin with the toys my mom and her brother use to play with. Mom says that Uncle Freddie played with this Wyandotte Posse Model Mechanical Shooting Gallery for hours.

This tin litho shooting gallery has a wind up key and two dart guns. My uncle use to play with this in the late 40s and early 50s.

My mother said she enjoyed playing with it as well. She got a kick out of watching the ducks go around and around.

Uncle Freddie said he and my mother would play checkers on the front porch for hours on end.

I could not believe my luck when found this bottle cap in the checkers bag. What was more unusual was the fact that all the checkers were accounted for.

I dug further down in the bin and came across this Poosh-M-Up Jr. 4-in-1 table top game.

Mom and her brother couldn't wait to get home from school to play with this tabletop pinball toy. The four games included Baseball, Bagatelle, Put-N-Take, and Colors.

The tabletop game looks like a lot of fun with all the brightly colored clowns playing baseball. There is even a keystone cop that officiates the game.

I had to ask my mom who did this western toy gun holster belong to because of the many pictures I have of her and her brother, they both owned toy pistols and holsters. She told me that this belonged to my uncle. I asked her how did she remember that, and she said that she preferred single holsters.

This was one of many that he owned. He loved playing cowboys and indians.

This is all that remains from the box that housed Mom's roller skates.

These very heavy, metal skates have metal ball bearing wheels and leather straps. Mom said she wore her skate key around her neck at all times to ensure that she was able to tighten her skates at the ready. These skates were one of her all time favorite toys from childhood. Mine was my Easy Back Oven, which I still have.

What was your favorite toy when you were a kid?

  1. Thanks so much for the feature! Now, about those vintage games and toys...it's great that your family is one that keeps things, and that YOU appreciate and honor it! My grandma had lots of garage sales and wanted everything NEW. Now I buy other grandma's things. :)

  2. I think it was our peddle car,I shared with my oldest brother. It had two seats and was quite posh. My little brother had his own.
I also liked my basket making set.
You have some wonderful vintage toys. How nice to still have them. Most get thrown out when they are finished with these days. Unfortunately when my family emigrated to Australia, from England,we kids had to leave behind all our toys.:(

  7. You have some real treasures there! Fun to look back and see what another generation played with. My favorite was my Barbie, I liked to make clothes for her. I still have my Barbie and my Aunt knitted a little sweater for her. Thanks for hosting, Laura

  8. How much fun to see all of those old toys! My favorite toy was a Betsy McCall doll. In fact, that is how I learned to sew was with that doll. I don't have a lot of old toys because I had three younger sisters and by the time the toys went thru four girls, there wasn't much left.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane

  10. Paula- What wonderful old toys. I am like your Mom. I wore those heavy old ball-bearing skates, too. They would loosen up and come off the side of your foot and your ankle would twist unless you kept them tightened. It was fun to see them here- xo Diana

  22. That is so nice you have your Mom's vintage toys. I don't even have a thing I played with as a child.

I use to love to play in our barn and play restaurant or school, I was always a waitress or a school teacher, my brother was my customer at the restaurant LOL
I loved my school pencil box I carried with me, I was probably 2nd or 3rd grade when I remember this

  25. Paula, I really enjoyed your post today and the pictures of your mother and uncles toys. How wonderful that your mother was able to keep these wonderful things. I don't have any of mine and I wish I did. There was quite a span of age difference between my older sister and brother and my brother, who was 18 months older than me, and me, the youngest in the family. As a result, the brother next to me and I were the ones who played together. Our favorite things was playing with the six-shooters and riding on the arms of my mother's rocking chair as if they were horses. Wonder if we were the only ones who ever did that? Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane!

  33. OMG, I just love vintage ANYTHING and these are all just wonderful!!! Some of them remind me of when I was younger too -- especially the skates... lol!!! The pinball game brings to mind something my brother had.

What a wonder you saved them all. Not being as appreciative years ago as I am now, I threw out a lot that probably would have been so cherished now... tsk-tsk!

Thank you so much for visiting me and I love your blog too, so I'm following as well!!!

    I'll be back, my friend!

  39. Good Afternoon Paula, I was able to get on line today and decided to check blogs which I follow and what a treat it was to read about the toys you had played with as a child and those of your mum. When I reached the photo of your mum's roller skates, I had a huge smile on my face as they were practically the same pair as I had. Like your mum, I adored my skates. They were my favourite toy, so we must be of a similar age. I wore mine when I was about 9years of age and living in Yorkshire, England. Thank you for the memory. I hadn't thought about the skates for years. Best Wishes from India (I'm still on holiday). Daphne

  40. Toys are my favorite collectibles. It's a sweet blessing that you all still have so many family treasures. Usually toys are lost or destroyed. Thanks for your kind encouraging words on my blog. I look forward to seeing more of you.

  46. Oh the "thrilling" time I had on my roller skates like your mom's. Those skates always came off and were constantly having to be adjusted. It's a wonder I didn't have a lot more scraped knees than I did.
