Ironclad

What's It Wednesday #93

Humans have been removing unsightly wrinkles from clothes for hundreds of years. The Chinese were the first to use hot metal to iron clothing. During the 19th century the Europeans used anything from wood, and metal to glass for smoothing out fabrics. 


This hefty guy originally hailed from India. The base of this iron housed very hot, glowing charcoal. In India, it was quite common for your clothes to be pressed by a gentleman known as a press wallah. These guys must have been the original Iron Man. <insert rimshot here> :-)

The holes in the hinged lid allowed for the coal to smolder continuously. I just love the sturdiness of these works of art. 

These irons were in use way before electricity. They were the "Rowenta" of their day, cutting edge technology. This lovely lady is heated by gasoline. The tank is where the fuel was housed for ironing. 

I use these beautiful technological advances of their day as fabulous...
...ironclad doorstops.

Fallin' for Copper

What's It Wednesday #92

As the temperature begins to drop (elsewhere) I can't help but long for the warm tones of fall. Although here in sunny South Florida that's not about to happen naturally. I decided to warm things up with some honeyed copper in the décor. This hammered copper watering can and pot work well together. Love the long curvy spout!

I try to pick up these little copper pots whenever I see them, they remind me of home and large ones that my mom had.

This bread server with blue and white porcelain handles is a favorite for brown and serve rolls at Thanksgiving. I like the squat round shape and attached handle.

This kettle is great for boiling water for tea, keeps it super hot. See the paddle in the back? The long handle makes it easy to reach into hot ovens for pizza. Yum!

Copper molds grace the walls as the wait to bake a tasty treat.

Copper ladle makes serving up hot cider an easy feat.

And what is this last bit of copper? It is my very favorite piece of copper. See the pretty cut out design? Take a guess.

A bed warmer! It was filled with hot coals and rubbed between the cold sheets to warm them in winter. How neat is that! Hope you add a little copper to your fall as well.

Boxing Gloves

What's It Wednesday #91

Ok so this week's post is not about "boxing gloves" at all. Instead, it's about glove boxes. Not the one in your car, aka, glove compartment (for those of us who remember it being called that), but the one perhaps on a lady's vanity. 

I have just chosen a new antique item to focus on and decided to bring you all along. Usually I share my collections during the middle or ending of my collecting.

No not this time. This is a brand new, fresh out of my head, obsession...I mean collection. 

As the kids say, "What had happened was..." I was sorting through my mother's, grand-mother's and great-grandmother's gloves a few weeks ago and was wondering what could I store them in. These sorority girls had beautiful gloves for all occasions. 


Then it hit me, like most of my compulsive collections, well "duh" I can display them in antique and vintage glove boxes. So of course I started scouring the antique shops locally and online. I wanted the first one to be special and of course Victorian. Y'all know I have a weakness for all things Victorian. 

There she was, calling my name. I loved how "Gloves" was embossed on the top of this very delicate box. I couldn't decide which pair of gloves to  store in the first of many glove boxes to come. 



So now I am looking for glove box number two, three four... What do you think? Wooden, celluloid, ormolu... I just glove them all. In fact, I am smitten.
