Those Were the Days

What's It Wednesday #110

This is an exciting time in our household. Our new house is almost finished being built, so needless to say I am neck high in boxes. As we prepare for the new house there are decorating and design decisions to be made...but of course. However (Here comes Paula's rant), these decisions have not been made easily because the good old decorating shows of yore no longer exist.

For me it all started as a kid with Steve Thomas (I liked him because he reminded me of John Boy and John Denver <don't ask>), Bob Vila, and Norm Abram.

Years later, when I got ready to move back to the United States from the Cayman Islands there were my buddies Susan Powell and Chris McWatt of Home Matters. OMG how I loved them so. As soon as I landed in the U.S. I ran to Home Depot and got paint and paint brushes. I was bit by the decorating bug.
Susan Powell and Chris McWatt -
Home Matters

Kitty Bartholomew

Lynette Jennings
Kitty was fun and exciting and Lynette was just plain magical.

Christopher Lowell
Christopher made me believe I could decorate any room my heart's desire. I still have all of his design books.

Debbie Travis
Don't you remember Debbie Travis' Painted House and Debbie Travis' Facelift?

Ok since we are going down memory lane in the middle of my rant, what about...
Decorating Cents - Joan Steffend

Room-by-Room - Matt & Shari
Ok confession, I was probably the only person on the planet that did not particularly like the show Room-by-Room, but I would give my eye-teeth to get that show back. We just don't have the variety of great decorating programs like we use to.

Designing for the Sexes - Michael Payne
Devine Design - Candice Olson
As far as I am concerned, once Devine Design went off the air it was down hill from there. In came the real estate shows. I am beyond sick of real estate shows (Not counting the Property Brothers of course).

Trading Spaces
Trading Spaces was Must-See-TV. Do you remember the marathons?

Dear Genevieve - Genevieve Gorder

Designer Guys - Steve & Chris
Does anyone other than me notice the amazing shows that came out of Canada...plus the gorgeous men (i.e. The Property Brothers)?

If Walls Could Talk - Grant Goodeve
Yes, I recognize that "If Walls Could Talk" was not a decorating show, but since this is my rant and Grant Goodeve was on "Eight is Enough" and the original "If Walls Could Talk" which was amazing and I had a school-girl crush on him...but I digress.

Gardening by the Yard - Paul James
Everything I learned about gardening I learned from Paul.

Room Service, Sarah's House & Sarah's Cottage -
Sarah Richardson
Ok so outside of the Property Brothers (Noticed I have mentioned them a few times in this post), I have had very little assistance in terms of resources. There are very few programs out there. So for the past nine months of building this house I have relied on the following limited resources for design ideas:

As I continue packing up boxes, all I can think of is... "Those Were the Days".

I have only named a few. What were some of your favorite decorating shows from "Back in the Day"?

  5. Hello Paula and congrats on the new home!!! Can't wait to see photos of your new spaces. I loved HGTV back in the day as well and I don't even watch it anymore. All the good shows are long gone. I loved Candice, her designs screamed elegance. I miss the old days of HGTV. Thank you for hosting and for the memories. Hugs, Beverly

  6. Glad to be back to party. I agree I hate all those real estate shows, decorating was what HGTV was all about! I miss all of these shows, wouldn't miss one of them, and I like Matt and Sherry! Gosh I wish they would bring them back. I really don't watch HGTV much any more.

  11. Congratulations on the new home!

I've been saying the same thing for the past couple of years.I think you named nearly all!

I use to enjoy Homes Across America with Joe Ruggiero. I also use to like the Kitchen and Bath show. I also like the original format of Martha Stewart before it became a variety show.

  12. Oh I loved them too...I used to get so excited to see what incredible ideas they all came up with, now the personalities are all whoopie and hyper, not exactly like real people, I adore the sara reruns, why can't she be on again, loved that show, sick of real estate shows...

  13. Yes yes yes....that is when hgtv was great, I too hate all the real estate shows....boring!! I want to see great ideas, creativity...things I can do ...not real estate. Great post...send it to HGTV along with all our comments..bring back the good shows! Im excited for your new home!!

  16. OMG, I so remember all those shows. i wish they were back, because honestly I am tired of the real estate shows myself. I mean seriously. If they would atleast show the way they decorated all the houses after they buy them, but they only show a few rooms if that. Good Luck on the move and hopefully you will show your home once you are all situated. Ana

  20. Well also you had all these decorating shows at one point, I for one can't imagine it was better than Pinterest where you can find inspiration galore! Good luck with the new house decorating Paula! Oh how I'd love to have a new house to decorate, a really fresh blank palette to start with. I envy you! Glad to play along again today btw.. Happy What's it Wednesday wishes to both of you!

  21. Oh, you named them girl, and i adored Kitty,
I loved when we would be invited to her home, so cottage French and so sweetly quaint a somewhat small home to love.
As for HGTV... Sick of it, just sick and tired of how it drags. I am trading loyalties to guess shows, Like Bravo and DIY network with Bronson Pincho, show, I could watch him for days.

You brought back some real grand inspiring programs.

This was a great post... And thank you for reminding me how disappointed I am with HGTV these days, I am so board ...

I am so looking forward to your new home and I hope you do a home tour for us.

    Lots of love this February

  22. Paula,
You are funny. Thanks for the invite to the festa.

I grew up without a T.V. and still don't have one. But I did take the furniture inserts out of the sunday paper when I was just a tiny girl, sort of pathetic, couldn't someone have bought me a design magazine? I probably never asked.
    Cheers,
    Natalie

  23. I really enjoyed this review of the great old decorating shows! I remember most of them, Chris Lowell, Lynette Jennings. Candice was my fave! You're right, they're running "what house will they buy" into the ground now! Take care - Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Paula,
Yes, so many of those are Canadian but the nice thing is we still get them up here. The shows haven't gone off the air but it sounds like you're not getting them down there for some reason. That's terrible!
Candice and Sarah are still on. The Designer Guys have a talk show now where they still talk about design. Maybe I should start up a business where I record these shows and ship them to all the Americans who love them, lol.
And I agree - those real estate shows are a snoozefest with one exception - Income Property - the host is a hottie!
Good luck with your move, it can be so stressful but no doubt your new home will be filled with unique treasures and reflect your beautiful personality.

  25. Oh Paula
I so agree with you I miss all the decorating shows my favorite was Candance Olson even though always felt i could never afford anything she did her designs were always something I would want in my house. Then my second favorite was Sara Richardson I loved her up to date materials and ideas.
Oh my gosh and a new house. How exciting can't wait to see pictures
With all your beautiful treasures your house will be a mansion

  26. You are so right about all of those shows...Trading Spaces was the bomb, and it went downhill when the producers started trying to change it up. Don't mess with success! I also love the original Design Star, and I've noticed that show is not as good now that its formula gets altered every year. Hey, HGTV, in case you haven't noticed, most of those Design Stars aren't even on tv any more! I also liked Lynette Jennings, Home Matters, and Christopher Lowell ("it's called merchandising!").

    ReplyDelete
  27. ps

What can we do to bring back those shows?????????????

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh Paula, what a great walk down memory lane! I also loved Joe Ruggiero's "Homes Across America" - remember that one?
I didn't realize you are a native Caymanian! What a pleasure to know that - your islands are beautiful, and the Grand is our very favorite place to vacation - many great memories made there. :) Have a great week, thank you for hosting & sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my goodness I so completely 100% agree with you! I loved all those older HGTV shows and I truly miss the design shows that were on in recent years. I cannot get over how many times they have to show Love It or List It and House Hunters. How do they think viewers want to see these shows over and over? The magazine is better than the channel because you get to see all the designers there at least.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow how exciting to be building a new home! We've built two many years ago and I loved it! I watched many of the shows you reflected on. I was an HGTV addict for a while but I'm also sick of the real estate shows on there. I don't envy your making the move just because that's so much work but the end result is worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  31. A new home! how wonderful because you get to do it alllll just the way you want it.
Loved all those shows esp. Christopher Lowell and Kitty B. sigh those were the good old days.

  32. Congratulations on your new home Paula...how exciting for you!!! The show I loved most was Decorating Cents with Joan Steffend. In particular I loved when they did the room redesigns or staging at the end of each show. And I am soooo with you crushing on Grant Goodeve! I know I don't watch HGTV any more because they are all real estate programs...one is fine but an entire day of RE programs...too much! Thank you for the trip down memory lave and thank you too for hosting. Have a great week!

  33. Oh yeah, I loved those shows I used to see on cable here. Specially the handsome guys, lol! There's really nothing out there anymore. I used to see interior designers in Spanish even from Florida, they were terrific! I love your post, I didn't realize how much I miss those shows until now! Thank you for hosting lovely ladies.

  35. I LOVE Candice Olsen, and Susan Richardson, and Genevieve!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. OMG!!!!!

I watched and I loved all of these shows. I even still have VHS tapes of the Christopher Lowell shows and play them on an old VCR!!!!!
I saw Matt and Shari from Room by Room at a Home Show in the area and they put on a demonstration.
I adored Lynette Jennings and it was her who first said Why Not Decorate For Winter and i have been ever since!! She also said that putting something black in every room balances and grounds the room.
And I also LOVED If walls could talk especially when they showed Older Victorian homes!
I HATE HGTV now because all they are concerned about is Selling your home and not about decorating it. That is why I love the Blogs so much...they took the place of all our beloved Decorating shows.....

Thanks for the trip down memory lane and for the party!!

    Hugs,
    Deb

  37. I remember and loved all of those programs.
Maybe someone from HGTV will read your post, and our comments, and rethink their programming.
We still get Sarah Richardson occasionally,Candice Olson, and Income Property, but I still miss all those great decorating programs we used to get.

  40. You bought back so many fabulous memories of some of my favorite shows. Thanks so much for the trip! Congratulations on your new home. Moving into my new home a couple of years ago was a nightmare for me. Too many memories and stuff accumulated during thirty five years to deal with.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my goodness...memory lane!!! I loved all those shows too. I don't understand why the decorating shows have gone away. Do we really need to watch hours and hours of people buying houses? Let's see them decorate them!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, I'm so with you!! I loved Design on a Dime, and Room by Room!! If I never see another House Hunters, I'll be happy!! Why did they do that????

    Thanks for hosting!

  43. I completely agree with you...where have all of the decorating shows gone? It is really rather sad. But a new house, how exciting and I am sure that you have come up with lots and lots of ideas on your own.

  44. As the others have said, what a trip down memory lane. When you get older, you have a tendency to say" those were the days". lol! HGTV today is not worth watching. It is bad enough that it is all about real estate, but they run the same show 10 times in a row and it is all repeats. Maybe they should let bloggers have a spot.
    Thanks for hosting,

Thank you for hosting the party. Have a wonderful week!

  49. Hi Paula,
I so agree, don't know why there are hardly any decorating shows on HGTV anymore, very disappointing, and I used to love divine design. Now I do like property brothers for sure, but show after show of real estate, gets
old pretty quickly and makes me glad we never got cable. But it used to
be such a thrill when we went away and got to watch cable cause of all those old shows you talked about. I have a feeling maybe a lot of decorator were not happy with them, cause it was probably cutting down on their business.
So I can understand that, if you make someone feel like they can
decorate anything........why would you need the expense of a decorator.
Anyway, hope you get plenty of great ideas for your new home, and may it be a tremendous blessing to you and yours.
    Thanks for hosting........
    Blessings, Nellie

  57. Hi Paula,
How exciting about your house! I don't watch HGTV anymore, since If Wall Could Talk and I think the other one I liked was Restore America. Both Victorian house shows.

  59. Oh how I miss all these shows! I lived for watching these shows for years it seemed. (I can do with fewer House Hunters - it's way overdone!) Candice, Sarah, Christopher, Kitty, Joanne, Joan, Matt & Shari were my friends. I even have an autographed photo of Matt &
Shari when I met them at a Home & Garden show. (I know... pitiful)

HGTV needs to find some new friends to help us decorate girls!

What a great post! I loved seeing your album of my old friends!!

  63. Good luck with all the unpacking! Can't wait to see your place once it's done- I'm sure it will be lovely!

My favorite show was Decorating Cents with Joan Steffand. I sure wish they'd bring that back!

    Thanks for hosting the party!

  64. Some very top notch designers offered a wealth of decorating advice in the heyday of the decorating show. Even though I was already an interior designer, I watched them all and learned a great deal from them. Someone needs to offering design programming that gives a little more information and a whole lot less drama!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm with you. When they took Kitty Bartholomew off the air, I totally lost interest in HGTV and haven't been back since. They had quality decorating shows back then. I don't know what these networks are thinking. Thanks for the memories and thanks for hosting such a great party.

  73. Wow! You've sure taken me down memory lane. I surely did love most of those shows. A few I haven't heard of before.

I loved Kitty Bartholemew, Katie Brown who I never see anymore and Nate Burkus when he used to have short features on Oprah. There is another Canadian, Kimberly Brown that I liked. She had a wonderful show on HGTV for awhile.

  74. What a fun post! Yes, I loved Kitty, Michael Payne and Lisa LaPorta! My favorite show was Country Home (I think it was called that!). I do enjoy the Property Brothers, but can't stand shows like Love it or List it. Too much whining and bickering. What the heck?? My go-to show is now The Pioneer Woman on the Food Network. Love her! And for decorating inspiration? Definitely blogs!
Have a great day and good luck with the unpacking!

  75. I loved all those shows, too. Like many others here, I don't really watch HGTV anymore because they don't have design shows. On weekend mornings they do have some home improvement shows but the design shows are gone. I've set my Tivo to record Sarah's House anytime it comes on. It's not too often but they do play reruns now and then.
