So Charming!

What's It Wednesday #167
We are quickly approaching June, the month of so many weddings that it gives Valentine’s Day a run for its money when it comes to love and romance.

But before the big day arrives, there are all those bridal showers and wedding parties. An old tradition that’s making its way back, are cake charms, and they’re just perfect for the occasion!

From the late 1800’s through the 1930’s socializing parties were very popular and many charms and fortunes dealing with romance and predicting a mate were incorporated into parties.

The charm is placed within the cake and a ribbon is attached for pulling. (I added a little bling to help the guest along!) Each draw has a different meaning. You might want to type out the meaning and attach it along with the charm. It’s a fun party favor and sweet memento of the event.

Some familiar charms are the baby carriage, heart for new romance, wedding bells, horseshoe for luck, a ship for travel and of course the proverbial “old maid”!

I’ve been collecting them whenever I run across them.

Many are still on their original cards or in boxed sets. My favorites are going into my latest project that I’m just TOO excited about, so be sure to come back and check it out!

    Those are super cute, and yes, charming! I remember we wore something similar to these in the 80s (although not having the same meaning, and much cheaper) on our wrists, and I had oodles, lol! Can't wait to see what you have in store. Thank you for hosting!

    I have charms on my wine glasses but I've never heard of cake charms ( I always learn something new from you Patty ! ) How beautiful - I'm going to pin this - wonder if they have them for baby showers?

    I had never heard of this tradition until I read about it in the latest R Homes magazine (and I have 6 older sisters!). So cute, but oh, the poor soul who gets the old maid, lol. Thanks for hosting us, and I hope your weekend is a blast.

    Very traditional in Christmas cakes, etc in England back to the 18th century...the wealthy used sterling silver, etc..they told your fortune when you found them in your serving! Great collection!

    Ok Patti, I have never been to a cake party where charms have been added, a wedding charm cake sounds so fun... And why have I never heard of this what planet am I from?
    It would be fun to come to one of your parties you always have all the fun. I have had some wine glass charms and I think everyone knows about them :))

    Thank you for this share, I now will look into some charms for my next wedding event perhaps for my nieces next year.... I have plenty of time to research and plan.

    Hi Patty, yes I learned of the cake charms from my mom. She said in Cuba when she was young and they had cake, she remembered that's what they did with wedding cakes. So for one of my sisters' wedding shower we did that. But we had the hardest time finding a bakery that would do it. But we did and it was really neat and fun.
    I love that tradition but I can see why they don't bake cakes with them in it. I love the ones that you have collected, so cute.

    Patti, I missed this when you first posted, but saw it mentioned in today's post. I popped right over. What a darling idea. I have to admit, I've not seen the idea before. Thanks for sharing. My grandmother, who was German, would put a nickel in a birthday cake. Somehow she always knew where it was and the birthday child was served the slice with the hidden treasure. (Ha! A nickel. Can you tell how old I am?)
