What's It Wednesday #12
Milk glass is known for being milky white and opaque or translucent. The original intent was for the glassware to look like porcelain, but cost much less to produce. It originated in Venice during the 16th century and included colors such as pink, blue, black, brown and yellow. You can still find milk glass in some of these colors, however, the opaque white is the most popular.
This milk glass hand dish is ideal for holding business cards or a beautiful butterfly.
In the early 20th century, milk glass was extremely popular among the wealthy. The appeal was in its delicacy and elegance.
This pedestal milk glass bowl is perfect for holding rose buds and petals in the bath. You can see the translucence of the glass in the picture on the right. I found this great find at the local Goodwill for $1.00.
During the Depression milk glass was not produced as elegantly as before. During the 1930s and 40s the production was of a lesser quality.
This hobnail bowl with the top sat on my grandmother's dresser for as long as my mother and I mother could remember. For decades it played the roll of the Tooth Fairy by housing the baby teeth of three generations of children.
What do you remember being on your relative's dresser?

Love the milk glass, I have the same hand. Some of my favorite candy dishes are milk glass. Thanks for hosting again this week, Laura
OK...I am REALLY going to date myself here...When I was first married, I gathered many of my home accessories by saving my S&H Green Stamps from the grocery store...My VERY FIRST purchase with these stamps was the Fenton White Hobnail Milk Glass basket with a handle.
It houses so many memories for me as I patiently awaited to fill in all those books to get it. I still have it...It sits on the night stand in our guest room.
You have such a wonderful collection with the added treasure of memories of family...
That hand is fantastic. I've only seen milk glass candy dishes and little pieces. I have a few that were my mom's. She kept her jewelry box on her dresser and our pictures.
Wow Paula! You always feature such beautiful things! I love the milk glass and all the wonderful things featured in your pictures. I am happy to link up again this week. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
The milk glass is gorgeous, and the hand is beautiful. Thanks tons for hosting. Hugs, Marty
I didn't realize you ladies were hosting a party, but then I am always the last to know these things. I linked up and added you to my buttons so I'll be back.
Thanks for hosting.
Thanks for sharing the history of milk glass. Thanks for hosting.
I love the old heavy milk glass. I have a candy dish my mother got at her bridal shower in 1957. It is in my love cabinet in my office
thanks for all you do to keep us informed with what all is beautiful in blog world
I remember my aunt has a shell box on her dresser...she kept spare change in it...and let me tell you...she KNOWS I want it someday!!
Dear Paula,
how amazing that you featured my lemontree blogpost. Thank you so much for this honor. All your reader are so creative and inspirative.
Your milkglass collection is something very special. Milk glass looks really shiny and elegant. How cute that the basket hold the baby teeth of three generations. I love that.
Best greetings, Johanna
The "hand" is my favorite piece. So elegant! Thanks for the party!
Looks like a fun party this week. can't wait to do some visiting.

Ooooo I'm your newest follower! Hope you follow back. I love Milk Glass and used to belong to the National Milk Glass Society. I have taken with me my favorite pieces when I scaled down and moved to a smaller house in Florida. But it doesn't stop the regret of losing the pieces that I gave away or left behind.
So very beautiful Paula!... (hello Patti too!)... love the story about the tooth fairy... I remember my grandmothers dresser holding pretty bottles of nail polish... and me begging her to paint my nails, which of course she always did... xoxo Julie Marie
Thanks for hosting. Glad I had something to share this week.
Rob
Thanks for the history of milk glass. I have a few pieces and am always looking for more.
I love your milk glass. It is a beautiful style glass. I have some nice pieces myself. Don't you just love the hobnail style? What a wonderful way to save memories by using it for the tooth fairy! great idea..
It's easy to see why milk glass is still so sought after....
Was happy you posted about it, as it gives me an opportunity to share my bud vase candles with other milk glass collectors.
Love participating in "What's It Wednesday" -
Love the milk glass, but you know, I love everything you write about. Such beauty. Thanks for hosting.
What do I remember from grandmother's dresser? Wedding photos! Loved looking at those keepsakes of beautiful ladies wearing lovely dresses.
Thank you for hosting this lovely gathering.
Debra
I love milk glass too! That hobnail bowl was perfect for all those tiny teeth *winks*
When I was little I was entranced by my mothers perfume bottles...I wouldn't leave them alone and received many a scolding for spritzing them *winks*. To this day Chanel No5 reminds me of her. And I'm still entranced with perfume! Vanna
I think Milk Glass is so neat. It works so well with so many other things. I too have a milk glass hand on my counter.

I have wonderful memories of a cute milk glass chicken that was on my grandmothers dresser...it held hair pins...I now have it:) It holds q-tips on my dreesing area of my bathroom.
Blessings,
Linda
Ooooh, I love milk glass, especially hobnail milkglass. I have it in every room of our home and am still collecting new pieces:)

On Dad's bureau sat a flat, carved wooden fish. He emptied his pockets at night and put the contents on the fish dish. One day I noticed it was no longer there, so I asked him about it. He reached up on the closet shelf and gave it to me! Dad is gone now, but whenever I see the fish, it reminds me of him.
What a charming collection you have, everything is so lovely!
Happy VTT!
I'm sorry I am so late! I didn't want to miss it anyway. I spent yesterday with mother as she's kind of sick. I love the milk glass as my grandma had some pretty hobnail candy dishes and I guess her children have them, my mom does not. I specially love the hand, so pretty. Thank you for hosting and I wish I knew why I haven't been able to link my post's thumbnail, but my header and this is going on in all the other parties too! Lots of love,
FABBY

I love that hand holding the butterfly...
I like milk glass especially the hobnails....Christine
I have always wondered--is all white glass milk glass or how do you tell? I got a ruffled bowl at Goodwill the other day and it looks like milk glass but there are no markings or anything. I love the hand you have, and that butterfly brooch is beautiful!
I love all of your milk glass. I remember milk glass candy dishes at my Great Aunt's house, paid more attention to the candy back then though.
Thanks for sharing.
Visiting from Common Ground.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Michele
I'm dreadfully late but I made it. I am so behind on everything! Thank you for visiting my blog and inviting me to come over and join the party. I so appreciate it.
I have always been a fan of milk glass. I really like your hand dish it is so unique, its beautiful. As much as I love milk glass, I do not own a single piece. :-) Thank you for linking up at Katherines Corner xo
I love milk glass, although I don't own any at the moment. I'll have to look at the Goodwill! I remember my Grandmother had some of it. Also, a favorite Aunt collect Carnival glass. I should do a post on it!
Hugs, Cindy
I love milk glass and hobnail. I've always wanted an oval hobnail butterdish, it would be useful & lovely!
What beautiful milkglass pieces you have. I love to use my different milkglass pieces here and there. They are so easy to decorate with. Thank you for joining TTF and have a wonderful week!
Dear Paula, milk glass is so beautiful..I especially love the pieces with the iridescent glaze!
As to what I remember seeing on dressers, my great-aunt had the most gorgeous Venetian millefiori paperweights...I fell for them when I was five years old, and they still fascinate me.
Wishing you you both a wonderful week!!
xoxo,
- Irina
