Happy Birthday to Me!

What's It Wednesday #63

Today I celebrated my birthday. I started the day off by thanking God for His many blessings. Then I treated myself. Many of you may remember that I love to collect cigarette cases.

Then you will see part of my collection and how I have turned them into picture frames.

Well I decided to buy myself a birthday present so my BFF and I went to visit one of my favorite local antique dealers and she just happened to have this adorable compact purse. Of course, me being me, I could not possibly leave it in the store. 

I could not believe my luck. This purse is several of the things I love to collect all rolled up into one compact purse. I think I will call her Rose. Rose dates back to the early 1930s. 

On the outside of the purse is a place that holds your tube of lipstick. When you open her up, there are a couple of compartments. I was pleasantly surprised to find the mirror intact. On the right side of the first compartment is a compact.

As soon as I opened Rose up I wondered about the very fashionable original lady that once carried this purse around. Here you can see the compact was well used.

When I went into the second compartment, I found that this is where the dance cards and cigarettes were kept. I of course placed a picture of my darling son Sebastian in there immediately. 

I sang "Happy Birthday" to myself all the way home. 

I couldn't wait to take Rose out for my birthday dinner with the family. It was the perfect accessory for the evening. I can't tell you how many compliments I received carrying around this vintage purse. I can imagine how special the original owner must have felt when she carried it around.

Silver Linings

What's It Wednesday #62
Many of you have gorgeous silver that you’ve inherited from family. So beautiful holding such precious memories. From time to time a piece here or there gets left behind, or borrowed and never returned. Those are the pieces that I collect and try to find new uses for. This pretty footed tray once had a lid I think and probably served a fine casserole. It now holds a welcoming tray of toiletries for guest.

This was a sugar shaker that now holds aromatic bath crystals.

This oil and vinegar set is one of my favorites. The missing bottle made me think of another way to use this very ornate set. It now holds mouthwash, a rinse cup, and a precious Victorian silver handled toothbrush.

A lovely silver candy dish becomes an elegant soap dish,


and this blinged up oil and vinegar now holds shampoo and conditioner.

 I adore the detail on this olive tray so it holds pearls, buttons, and other gems that I use in my bottle designs.


How about the double-decker toast and butter rack. Perfect on a desk for letters or cards.


A sweet little butter dish, perfect for holding a sweet treat.

The odd sugar bowl can always make a perfect home for a plant,

and a ladle doles out just the right amount of detergent in the laundry room. I was torn between names for this post. Originally I thought “Kitchen Closed” since the items are all kitchen related.

But since they each give me so much pleasure in their new roles (like this pickle castor that holds cotton balls in the bath), I chose silver linings, because behind every cloud you can always find one. Happy hunting!

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

What's It Wednesday #61

 Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice...let's start with the Everything Nice.

 Patti and I are pinching ourselves because our blog is featured in the Site Seeing section of the March issue of Romantic Homes Magazine. 
When we received our copy in the mail, needless to say we did the happy dance. 
We are so excited to be in such great blog company. 

Sugar and spice and certainly everything nice were once served from this beautiful Edwardian sterling silver cruet set. I collect all kinds of cruets. This cruet set has a rounded sterling silver frame. The frame of this cruet set holds six beautifully cut crystal bottles. 

The reason I am attracted to these elegant cruet sets is because each set has a completely different personality. The Victorians and Edwardians always graced their dining tables with these functional works of art.  

This set now sits as a centerpiece on our dining room table. Many of my other cruets are found in the bathrooms with essential bath and body oils and bath salts. It's a wonderful way to display these elegant pieces throughout the house. 

Cruets have been around since the 17th century. I am always fascinated with the details of such pieces. This particular crystal topper has a cruet spoon attached. This is a first for me. 

I often wonder what this tiny spoon could have been used for. Perhaps for vinegar, mustard or jam? 

The silver perforated lid with the stars is my favorite part of the entire set. 

 The last "Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice" I would like to share with you is that as of last Friday we have new addition to our family. She is our three year old princess. More details to come, after the adoption is finalized.
