What's It Wednesday #90
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men”
(King
James Version, Matthew 5:13).
To
be called “salt of the earth” is to be of great worth and
reliability. A worker who is “worth his salt”, is a precious
commodity.
Long
before it sat in pretty shakers on our dinner tables salt or sodium
chloride was recognized as an essential element in the diet of
humans, animals, and even some plants.
Salt
was in general use long before recorded history in religious
ceremonies, as a method of trade, and as currency.
It
is no wonder that like sugar and tea, it has so many forms and
uniquely designed containers.
My
favorite are these old cut crystal shakers with silver tops. Look at
the one with the lovely mother of pearl, love it! I like grouping the
different varieties that I find.
This
pretty swan individual salt cellar has its own serving spoon. I top
my individual cellars with broaches to make ring holders.
Oh
well, “back to the salt mines!”
Hugs,
Here are this Week's Features:

How special is your post on Salt of the Earth. Beautiful picture!!! Thanks for hosting
ReplyDeleteIt was so lovely to have you visit at Lawn Tea, and I'm so glad you joined us!
ReplyDeleteI just come here and look my eyes full of your lovely things and arrangements, and the wonderful dainties I remember from childhood. All the old perfume bottles and salt cellars (how I LONGED for just one of the little cut-glass ones with the doll-sized silver spoon---there were a set of six in my Aunt Lo's china cabinet, and she'd let me "set" her coffee table with them when we'd visit).
And all the windows you open, with your hosting the "days" and "themes" are just a great extra---I just get lost wending my way through, and almost have to have a string to guide me back from all the lovely places.
rachel

I remember reading somewhere that salt used to be very expensive because it was hard to get. Hard to believe that now, huh? It's so plentiful and now our doctors want us to use less of it! LOL! I love the idea of using the little salt cellars to hold rings.
ReplyDeletePatti,
