Tantalizing!

What's It Wednesday #34
Today I'm sharing a rather tantalizing item, the tantalus. The tantalus is an open work rack that holds large cut crystal liquor decanters, usually in sets of three or two. (Mine is a single!) The tops of the decanters are secured with a locking mechanism so that the stoppers can’t be removed unless the tantalus is unlocked with a key.

The tantalus gets its name from the Greek mythological king, Tantalus, since tantalized means to be “tempted with something unattainable”.  King Tantalus was condemned to spend eternity in hell, forced to stand in a pool of water that receded each time he bent to drink, never able to quench his thirst.

It was patented in 1881 by John Betjemann . It was once thought that it was designed to prevent household servants from stealing or sampling the decanter’s contents. However, it is much more likely that the ingenious device was just another novelty that became popular with the affluent middle-class of the late nineteenth century. Tantaluses were popular in England up through the early 20th century.

Hope I was able to tempt you with my tantalus! Thirty?

Hugs,
Patti

Fabulous Finds

What's It Wednesday #33

Mondays are usually blah and uneventful, right? Not when I take a trip to my favorite antique store (that’s now open on Mondays!) I found this gorgeous vanity tray with an etched mirror! I’d not seen one like it before. I carried it around in my arms the whole time!

As I walked past the checkout counter, I spied with my little eye a pretty beveled glass box. “Is it sold?” I asked. Nope, they hadn’t gotten around to putting it out yet. Yea me! That star diamond cut glass top and those cute cherubs just had to come home with me!

Now I really just came to look for pillboxes, but this powder jar with hand painting and cameo lid wooed me away. That blue is irresistible!

I love all the religious artwork and statues I’ve been seeing lately, so I had to have this beautiful statue of our lady, (only four dollars)!

My eye always goes to things that are unique, and this umbrella shaped thermometer is perfect! Bone ivory carved handle of a dog (it even has a chain!) attached to a brass umbrella. It’s quite old and still has the mercury inside! This is getting pretty rare since mercury hasn’t been used in thermometers since 1974.

Okay, so I was almost done paying up, and was almost out the door… until suddenly my supersonic birdcage radar honed in on this beauty! I need it like another hole in my head, but here she is… home at last! Hope you have a great week and get some fabulous finds too!
Hugs,

Patti

Tattered and Worn

I’ve always had a love for things that are “of an age”, distinguished and filled with character.

For some that means unblemished perfection,

but for me, the battle scars and worn scuffs of time just reveal a life of service and love.

Would you have passed on these lovely Victorian photo albums with worn and faded covers, tattered ends loose save for their elegant clasps that nod to better days?

Ah, but these are treasures that I give pride of place.

I can’t resist old velvet and handsome lace candy boxes that held chocolates from a young suitor.

Or this embroidered box which may of held love letters or trinkets from a first love.

The colors gone soft and muted with time.

Look at this gorgeous old leather handbag and coin purse, both butter soft and cracked with age.

My reactions to objects are visceral. I love first with my heart. This process has served me well over the years. I still love my chipped porcelain, my tarnished silver, and my clocks that don’t keep time. I buy what I love, so I can never be disappointed. I hope you will do the same.
Hugs,
Patti
