Feast or Famine

What's It Wednesday #98

I am still giddy and doing a happy dance over this weekends finds! Most ventures yield a trinket here or there, but I found a gem at every turn Saturday. First, this fabulous old Victorian flower basket. I've seen them on the blogs but thought I'd have to go to eBay to find one for myself. Digging really paid off when I found this under a bench at a local antique shop.

Then in the same shop I spied this amazing old candle sconce. LOVE the detailed flowers and leaves.

Oh, did I mention they're a pair!? Forty dollars for the set. Yay!

I made a quick stop at Goodwill, which yielded this pair of Staffordshire dogs. Now I know they aren't the real deal, but they look great, and at $4.00 each, I call that amazing! I was on a roll.

So I popped into my favorite thrift shop and found this cute old silhouette made from resin of sort,

and this one from the fifties.

Oh, yes. A pair, left and right facing, for only $5.00. Oh boy!

Now, you won't believe the luck, but a yard sale produced this gorgeous I. Rice perfume bottle with atomizer still in tact.

Last, but certainly my favorite, this truly ornate old wall shelf. The detail is incredible, as was my day. Most times it's a famine, and I don't find anything, but sometimes it's a veritable feast! Keep digging.

In a Jam

What's It Wednesday #97

First I was in a pickle...then I was in a jam. Let me start from the beginning. Being a Victoriana (Collector of things from the Victorian period 1837-1901), I have a long list of things I am always on the hunt for. Finding the perfect pickle castor was top priority. 

I love the silver frames (silver is a weakness of mine). The frames are usually quite ornate with lacy filigree, scrolls, shells, flowers, tassels, birds, etc. On the side of the frame is a little hook for the tongs to rest. The glass jar insert is equally as ornate and add a lovely elegance to any tablescape.

Once I placed the pickle castor on the table I realized I was in a jam. I did not actually want to put pickles in my pickle castor. We were having croissants, fresh fruit and sparkling apple cider for breakfast.  Then it hit me. Jam!!!! So I placed orange marmalade in the beautiful glass. It completed the fall colors of the table. 



Once breakfast was over I put fall candy in the pickle castor for the kids. In an instant I was no longer in a pickle but enjoyed being in a jam. This Victorian pickle castor, from the mid 1800s with orange marmalade or fall candy, is now my favorite fall accent.

Scent-sational Find

What's It Wednesday #96

 
Today is a true “What's It Wednesday”. I'm showing a little goody that I found, and I’ve not a clue as to what it is. Maybe you can help.

It's this cute little flower shaped piece. Now the tag said it was a tea strainer, I was happy, I collect those too! But the more I looked, I knew that couldn't be true.

You see a tea strainer has a longer handle for stirring and

tiny holes front and back to allow the water to flow through.

This back does not, even though it does have a twist clasp that allows you to open it.

Least you think it a pin to wear, alas no, it has no pinning shank.

It does have a tiny compartment and a domed perforated top.

"Could it be for powder?," a nice lady suggested. But who would work that hard to put such a tiny amount of powder inside?

My guess is that its one of these, a vinaigrette. A small container that housed a small piece of cotton soaked with a lady's favorite scent.

The perforations allow for a quick sniff if one encounter a foul odor.

Although I don't know “what” it really is, I had to have it. I really love “what's its”, and this one is going to sit on my dressing table giving off a lovely scent from a perfumed soaked cotton ball as I dream of what it might be.
